Machu Picchu - Wow, wow, and wow !

Machu Picchu - visite tant attendue de notre tour du monde. Pour Elliot en particulier qui avait mis le Pérou dans sa liste de pays souhaités, rien que pour pouvoir le voir. Ce nom est tellement mythique que nous avions un peu peur d'être déçus, mais je peux vous dire que ce site vaut largement sa renommée.

Le Machu Picchu se mérite. On n'y arrive pas facilement, à moins de vouloir payer le train depuis Ollantaytambo qui est hors de prix : dans les 500$US un aller/retour pour nous quatre. Nous avons considéré que c'était vraiment exagéré pour un trajet qui ne dure que 1.1/2H, et avons ainsi décidé d'opter pour une solution bien moins cher, mais aussi bien plus long.

Nous étions déjà dans la Vallée Sacrée et avons pris un minivan qui nous a amené de Urubamba à Hidroelectrica - un trajet qui dure approx. 6 heures sur une route effrayante à flanc de montagne. Ce n'était vraiment pas de tout repos, ni pour le corps, ni pour l'esprit.........Une fois arrivés à Hidroelectrica nous sommes partis à pied jusqu'à Aguas Calientes en suivant le chemin de fer - 2 heures de marche. Nous étions bien contents d'arriver et de prendre une bonne douche (pour une fois bien chaude - yessssssss!)

Le lendemain matin, levés à 4H pour prendre un petit dej vite fait avant de prendre un des premiers bus qui nous a amené au Machu Picchu. L'émotion en arrivant était grande, et n'a pas vraiment diminué tout au long de la journée tellement le site est époustouflante ! Nous y avons passé 10 heures en tout, et on y serait resté encore plus ! Le matin de bonne heure nous avons commencé par faire l'ascension de la Montana Machu Picchu, grande montagne qui surplombe le site. Encore une montée difficile - 600m de dénivelé positive en seulement 1.6km, par les escaliers Inca d'origine, en pierre, parfois très hauts, et souvent dans le vide ........Mais les vues dans la montée et une fois en haut sont magnifiques, ça valait bien la peine !

En début d'après-midi, après être redescendus et avoir pris un peu de repos, ainsi que notre pique-nique, nous avons pris un guide francophone pour nous raconter et nous aider à comprendre l'histoire de cet endroit. Il s'appelait Alain ! était très sympa et a rendu la visite super intéressante ! De plus l'après-midi est beaucoup plus tranquille que le matin pour faire la visite et nous avons ainsi pu profiter du site dans le calme et sans foule. Quand c'était fini, on n'avait pas envie de partir tout de suite et nous nous sommes promenés encore dans le soleil de fin d'après-midi, en absorbant toute l'énergie du lieu dans cette belle lumière, comme si nous voulions capturer ces moments et l'émotion ressentie pour toujours.....

Machu Picchu - a long awaited visit in our trip. In particular for Elliot who had put Peru in his list of countries he wanted to see, for the Machu Picchu alone. The name is so mythical that we were afraid of being disappointed, but I can assure you that the Macchu Picchu more than lives up to it's fame !

The Machu Picchu is hard work to get to. Unless you are willing to pay the train from Ollantaytambo, which costs a small fortune : around 500$US for a return trip for the four of us ! We decided this was an extortionate price to pay for a journey which only lasts 1.1/2 hours one way, and therefore opted for a much cheaper, but also much more time consuming option.

We were already in the Sacred Valley, and took a minivan from Urubambma to Hidroelectrica - a journey of around 6 hours on windy and scary mountain roads, some of which are only the width of the van, with no barriers or safety and where you look down to the valley far, far below........it was not a relaxing trip, for either the body or the mind.........
When we arrived in Hidroelectrica we set off on foot to get to Aguas Calientes following the railway - a 2 hour walk. We were very glad to get to our hotel and have a good shower (lovely and hot for once - yessssssss !)

Next morning up at 4am for a quick breakfast before joining the already long queue to get on one of the first buses up to Machu Picchu. The emotion was great upon arrival, and did not really diminish throughout the day - it is just so amazing ! We spent 10 hours there and could have easily spent more still ! In the early morning we climbed the Montana Machu Picchu, a large mountain which looks down on the ruins. Another hard-going climb up, 600m elevation gain for a distance of only 1.6km, on the original steep Inca stone steps, But the views on the way up and from the top were magnificent, and made up for the huffing and puffing of the climb !

In the early afternoon, after we had come back down, had some rest and our picnic, we hired a French-speaking guide to tell us about, and help us understand the history of the ruins and the Inca empire. His name was Alain ! was good fun and gave us a really interesting tour. Moreover, the afternoon is much better and quieter for a guided visit so we were able to make the most of the tour without the morning crowds. When we had finished we still didn't want to leave and had another lingering wander around enjoying the warm afternoon sun, absorbing the energy of this amazing place, wanting to capture these moments for always in our minds......
