La Paz - quelle ville hors des normes ! Sa situation géographique, encaissée entre des montagnes gigantesques, la ville monte et descend avec ses ruelles aux pentes raidissimes. Entre le bas de la ville où vivent les gens les plus aisés, et le haut de la ville (El Alto) où vivent les plus pauvres il y a un dénivelé étonnante de 800m ! On y est constamment essoufflé par le manque d’oxygène et l'effort nécessaire pour grimper jusqu'en haut de ces ruelles, alors que les locaux se promènent, le dos souvent chargé de sacs colorés, pleins de marchandises.
Pas mal de personnes nous avaient dit ne pas aimer La Paz. En effet la ville grouille, il y a beaucoup de circulation et donc de la pollution, les égouts ne sentent pas toujours très bon, mais malgré ce, cette ville animée ne nous déplaît pas.
Nous faisons du shopping, regardons avec curiosité le carrefour des sorcières où fœtus de llama, amulettes et poudres bizarres sont en vente, parcourons les marchés où des cholitas avec leurs énormes jupons et leurs chapeaux bien typiques vendent des montagnes de fruits et légumes, de viandes, de fromages.
Encore une fois par hasard , nous croisons Coline et Fabien et prendrons le télésiège avec eux tout en haut de la ville au marché d'El Alto, d'où les vues sur la ville et sur les montagnes environnantes sont superbes. On finit la journée ensemble par une bonne pizza et une bouteille de vin rouge bolivien pas mauvais du tout ! Le lendemain pour tout le monde, direction Copacabana et le Lac Titicaca - à priori nous n'avons pas fini de nous croiser !
La Paz - not your usual type of city ! With its geographical situation stuck in between gigantic mountains, the city's steep streets go up and down, up and down. Between the bottom of the town where the more comfortable live, and the top of the town (El Alto) where the poorer live, there is a difference in altitude of 800m ! Us Europeans are constantly out of puff due to the lack of oxygen and energy needed to climb all these streets while the locals walk around with huge and colourful packages on their backs, full of goodies.
Many had told us that they did not like La Paz. Indeed the city is chaotic, heavy traffic causes pollution, and the drains do not always smell good..... but despite all of this, the city still appeals to us.
We do some shopping, visit with curiosity the witches corner where llama foetus, amulets and strange powders can all be bought, walk through the large markets where the local cholitas wearing their bulky skirts and typical hats sell mountains of fruit and veg, meat, cheese.
Once again we bump into Coline and Fabien with whom we take the cable car up to the El Alto market right at the top of the city where the views of the city below and the surrounding mountains are amazing ! We finish off the day together with a delicious pizza and a decent bottle of Bolivian wine. The next day we are all heading to Copacabana and Lake Titicaca - looks like we will be seeing more of each other !
