Notre prochaine étape était une petite station balnéaire qui s'appelle Merimbula, trois heures de plus encore au sud. Installés dans un petit appart spacieux et avec tout ce dont on avait besoin y compris piscine chauffée, table de ping pong et barbecue dans le jardin, nous avons passé trois jours agréables. Promenades sur les plages ou autour de l'étang, baignade piscine et mer (mais rapide car l'eau de l'océan australe est très frisquette par nos standards méditerranéens.......)
Un matin Alain est allé se promener sur la plage en attendant qu'on se réveille et a failli marcher sur un phoque qui prenait un bain de soleil. Sans ses lunettes il croyait un tronc - et oui, c'est ça la jeunesse ! Bref, nous sommes tous retournés le voir, il n'avait pas bougé - il vit dans la baie à Merimbula depuis un an nous a-t-on dit. Chouette de le voir de si près. Et comme si ça ne suffisait pas, dans la foulée nous avons vu une raie énorme qui nageait tranquillement au bord dans les eaux transparentes!
Autre chouette visite était dans une volière dans un village proche - nous avons passé une bonne heure et demie à observer les oiseaux DANS la volière. On ne peut pas imaginer comme c'est mieux de voir les oiseaux sans avoir à regarder à travers un grillage. Il faut dire que la volière était très grand et très bien aménagé, vraiment comme un habitat naturel. Qu'est ce qu'on aime être entouré de toute cette flore et faune !
Next stop was another 3 hours further south in a little seaside resort called Merimbula. We settled into our spacious and comfortable "unit" they call it here - like a flat, motel style, with all we needed including heated pool, table tennis table and barbecue in the garden, and some welcome date scones from the great manageress Annette. We spent a great 3 days just walking along the beaches and the marshlands, swimming in the pool or in the sea (but not for long as the ocean water is pretty cold in comparison with our Mediterranean standards ....)
One morning Alain, out for a morning walk on the beach while waiting for us to wake, just about stepped on a seal who was sunbathing on the beach. Not having his glasses on, Alain thought it was a trunk of wood - that's old age for you :) Anyway we all went back to see him, he was still there basking - we were told he had been living in the bay for about a year. Great to see him so close !
And as if that wasn't enough we then saw a huge stingray swimming calmly along the edge of the transparent waters!
Another fab visit was to a nearby aviary where you observe the birds INSIDE - it makes such a difference not to look at them through the cagewire - it was a big aviary with a great environment, just like natural habitat. How we have been enjoying being surrounded by all of these birds and animals !
